South Jersey Science Programs Spotlighted at Coriell Science Fair

BLACKWOOD, NJ – Students, teachers, parents and family members gathered on the Camden County College Blackwood campus Saturday, March 21 for the 34th Annual Coriell Science Fair.

Recognized as one of the largest and longest running fairs in the region, the Coriell event drew hundreds of gifted student scientists in grades 6-12 from schools in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties.

"New Jersey is an established leader in the area of education, and the tremendous South Jersey school systems have been essential to earning that distinction," says Dr. Michael Christman, President and CEO of Coriell Institute. "I continue to be impressed – and encouraged, as a science professional – by the rigorous and comprehensive curriculum being taught and learned in our local classrooms."

A range of scientific categories were represented at the Coriell Fair, including behavioral and social sciences, engineering, medicine & health, and many more. Students demonstrated their creativity, critical thinking skills and societal regard by submitting an assortment of interesting and constructive projects:

  • Designing DNA Scaffolds for Biomedical Uses
  • Land and Sea Ice Reflection's Effect on Global Warming
  • Which Citrus Fruit Will Charge My iPhone Fastest?
  • Thermochemistry: Can a Change in Pressure and Volume Directly Affect the Enthalpy of a Non-Ideal Gas?
  • The Effects of Over-the-counter Painkillers on Liver Anatomy
  • Synthesis for an Edible Alternative to Plastic Bottles
  • Simple Alternative to Road Salt
  • Too Much Chocolate!
  • How Does Playing Video Games Affect Your Adrenaline?
  • Computer Bug: A Study of Bacteria Comparing Traditional Keyboards and On-Screen Keyboards in Personal Settings

In addition to special awards, cash prizes and college scholarships, students completed for an opportunity to advance to the regional finals March 31 to April 2 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.
