Hundreds of Talented Students Compete in 33rd Annual Coriell Science Fair

03/2014

BLACKWOOD, NJ – On Saturday, March 22, hundreds of passionate and gifted student scientists will demonstrate their abilities at the 33rd Annual Coriell Science Fair, to be held on the Camden County College campus in Blackwood.

Representing schools in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties in grades 6 to 12, the Fair has become a regional tradition over the last three decades and brings together some of the most enterprising students as part of an opportunity to vie for monetary prizes and college scholarships.

"South Jersey is home to some truly fantastic science education programs, and this is their time to shine," says Dr. Michael Christman, president and CEO of Coriell Institute. "These dedicated students have been working for months with the assistance of teachers and parents. We're very pleased to provide this platform to showcase the region's excitement for science."

Some of the interesting project titles this year include:

  • Will Machines Conquer Mankind?
  • Space Exploration – Travel to Mars
  • Stroop State of Mind
  • Creating a Cost-Efficient Electrical Generator Using Overlapping Magnetic Fields
  • Acupuncture and the Placebo Effect
  • Fun with Antigravity
  • Getting Smart with Music
  • A-maze-ing Learning
  • Ready, Set, Grow!
  • Cricket Survival after Simulated Nuclear Event
  • Power Plants: Comparative Analysis of Redox Electro/Thermal Conductivity in Common Weeds

A collection of highly trained judges from throughout the Delaware Valley composed of professors, scientists and business and health experts, will volunteer to evaluate the project submissions and interview students about their experimentation. Top finishers from the Coriell Science Fair advance to the Delaware Valley Science Fair April 1-3 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and then may advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 11-16 in Los Angeles, CA.

The public is invited to attend on Saturday, March 22, to view projects from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and observe the awards ceremony starting at noon.

Key sponsors for this year's event include TD Bank, Camden County College, Dow Chemical Company, Gloucester County College, Bollinger, and PSE&G.
