CMSRU and Coriell Build Alliance in Education

12/2011
CAMDEN, NJ  – Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) and Coriell Institute for Medical Research, two leading healthcare and research institutions on The Cooper Health Sciences Campus in Camden, NJ, recently signed a formal agreement to establish a medical education affiliation. The agreement affords Coriell's world-renowned "human genome" scientists and researchers the opportunity to serve as biomedical science faculty for medical students attending Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.
"Coriell is internationally known for its significant contributions and progressive approach to medical science," said Paul Katz, MD, Founding Dean of CMSRU, the first new medical school in New Jersey in more than 30 years. "We're proud that, through this important collaboration, our students and faculty will have access to some of the world's brightest scientists, state-of-the-art laboratories and important basic science research being conducted in personalized medicine, stem cell biology, cytogenomics, genotyping, and biobanking."

Through the agreement, scientists from Coriell will contribute to curriculum development, teaching, and the development of high-quality research projects for students at CMSRU. They will also participate on CMSRU's multi-disciplinary Research Strategic Planning Committee, which determines the future research focus of the medical school.

Michael Christman, PhD, Coriell's President and CEO, added, "Cooper Medical School of Rowan University creates an innovative forum for medical education, as demonstrated by the incorporation of genomic education into its curriculum. Coriell staff and scientists look forward to sharing expertise and guiding CMSRU students in dynamic research experiences at the Institute."

In addition to its agreement with Coriell, CMSRU is also collaborating with the University of the Sciences, through its Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, to establish an interprofessional healthcare education and practice model that will encourage a team approach to patient care.

About CMSRU
Rowan University and The Cooper Health System partnered in June 2009 to establish Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (www.rowan.edu/coopermed), the first new medical school in New Jersey in 30 years. Located in Camden, New Jersey, CMSRU received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in June 2011, and will welcome its inaugural class in August 2012.

About Coriell Institute
Coriell Institute for Medical Research is an independent, non-profit biomedical research center based in Camden, New Jersey. Founded in 1953, the Institute is dedicated to unlocking the genetic code of human disease. Coriell is a pioneer in genomics, examining the utility of genetic information in clinical care through the Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative research study (cpmc.coriell.org). The Institute is also exploring the promise of induced pluripotent stem cells – stem cells created from skin or blood – and their role in disease research and drug discovery. Additionally, Coriell continues to be recognized as the world's leading biobank, distributing biological samples and offering custom research and biobanking services to scientists around the globe.
