William G. Rohrer Charitable Foundation Awards Coriell Institute Grant for Cancer Research

The William G. Rohrer Charitable Foundation has awarded the Coriell Institute for Medical Research a $500,000 grant to support the Institute’s ongoing cancer research. The grant, structured for disbursement over three years, will allow for the hiring of additional scientists and the acquisition of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.

“We know more about cancer today than doctors a generation ago could have ever dreamed. Science has equipped doctors and their patients with excellent tools to identify, understand, and treat many forms of cancer to great effect,” said Jean-Pierre Issa, MD, Coriell’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “While cancer remains a powerful foe in medicine, these advances show that investments in research pay off in better human health. This support from the William G. Rohrer Charitable Foundation is critical as we continue this work.”

This generous gift will support Coriell’s growing team of research scientists focused on the study of cancer. This team also receives support from a number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, including a prestigious Specialized Program of Research Excellence (or SPORE) grant issued by the National Cancer Institute last year.

The William G. Rohrer Charitable Foundation is a longtime supporter of Coriell’s. In 2014, the foundation awarded Coriell a $1 million grant award to support the Institute’s work with induced pluripotent stem cells, and Coriell’s cryogenenic facility, where the world’s most diverse collection of biosamples is stored, was renamed the William G. Rohrer Cryogenic Facility after a gift in 2004.

About the Coriell Institute for Medical Research

Founded in 1953, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research is a nonprofit research institute dedicated to improving human health through biomedical research. Coriell scientists lead research in personalized medicine, cancer biology, epigenetics, and the genomics of opioid use disorder. Coriell also hosts one of the world's leading biobanks—comprising collections for the National Institutes of Health, disease foundations and private clients—and distributes biological samples and offers research and biobanking services to scientists around the globe. To facilitate drug discovery and disease study, the Institute also develops and distributes collections of induced pluripotent stem cells. For more information, visit Coriell.org.
