Coriell Institute made a sizeable impact at a recent biotechnology event.
Organized by the International Society for BioProcess Technology (ISBioTech) and staged over the course of three days in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the meeting was an occasion for scientists from non-profit, government and industry research organaizations to discuss emerging trends in biobanking and quality control.
The conference was divided into three segments, each focusing on a pressing topic area: cell and tissue banking; containment control; and process analysis and automation.
Dr. Alissa Resch – principal investigator of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Repositories at Coriell, co-chaired the cell and tissue banking session with Dr. Yvonne Reid from American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). She also delivered a talk on the value of biorepository specimens for proficiency testing.
Additionally, Coriell's executive director of operations, Dr. Kristina Green, presented a perspective on human cell line authentication, while Dr. Nahid Turan, principal investigator of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Human Genetic Cell and Congenital Heart Disease GEnetic NEtwork Study (CHD GENES) Repositories, spoke about the importance of genetic reference materials for genome sequencing.
"It was validating to interact with so many researchers and representatives either already aware of Coriell's mission, or eager to learn more about the specimens and service offerings we provide," said Dr. Resch.
"The biobanking industry is primed for growth and innovation in the years ahead and it's evident that Coriell is vital to that effort."
